Bühler launches inductively heated wafer oven, cuts energy use by 50%

Bühler Group has launched OptiBake, the first wafer baking oven powered by induction heating, which reduces energy use by up to 50% compared to conventional gas-fired ovens.

Designed for flat and hollow wafers, OptiBake uses electromagnetic fields to heat baking plates directly, removing combustion and emissions such as CO₂, CO, and NOx. Bühler says the oven supports energy efficiency and environmental goals, especially when using low-carbon electricity.

Sandra Lutz, Head of Bühler’s Wafer Business Unit, said OptiBake meets the need for efficiency, cost control, and reduced emissions. The oven offers individual plate temperature control for precise heat distribution and product consistency.

Lower baking chamber temperatures reduce equipment wear and noise, and baking scraps can be reused. With no open flames or electromagnetic interference, the system is designed for safe, flexible operation in industrial settings.

OptiBake was awarded the 2025 Lower Austrian Innovation Award. Bühler developed it with support from academic partners and manufacturers including Loacker, which joined as pilot customer.

Loacker executives said the oven fits with the company’s goals for energy efficiency and emissions reduction in baking operations.

Bühler supports customers through its Wafer Innovation Centre in Austria, which offers research, development, and technical support.
