As of 20 March 2025, farmers in 19 regions of Ukraine have completed sowing spring cereals and pulses on 250.4 thousand hectares. The largest sown area this season was barley with 133.5 thousand hectares. This was followed by peas with 57 thousand hectares, spring wheat with 36.7 thousand hectares and oats with 16.9 thousand hectares.
Mykolaiv, Ternopil, Kirovograd, Vinnytsia and Rivne were among the leading regions in sowing. While Mykolaiv region was the most sown region with 43 thousand hectares, 22.5 thousand hectares of barley, 18.7 thousand hectares of peas, 1.5 thousand hectares of wheat and 0.3 thousand hectares of oats were sown here. Ternopil region ranked second with 31.3 thousand hectares of cultivated area. In this region, 21.3 thousand hectares of barley, 6.4 thousand hectares of wheat, 2.1 thousand hectares of peas and 1.5 thousand hectares of oats were sown.
In Kirovograd region 25.9 thousand hectares, in Vinnytsia region 24.1 thousand hectares and in Rivne region 15.2 thousand hectares were sown. Barley, wheat, peas and oats were sown in these regions.
In total, more than 5.7 million hectares of spring cereals and pulses are planned to be sown in Ukraine in 2025. This is the same area as in 2024. However, the notable feature of the new season is the 28% increase in the area under spring wheat sowing to 222.8 thousand hectares. This is in line with the stabilisation of wheat demand from milling companies and exporters.
As the Ukrainian agricultural sector continues to play an important role in the global grain market, farmers’ planting strategies this year are being shaped in line with both domestic and foreign demand.
