Milling Hall of Fame Inducts Abubakar Bakhresa in 2026

The Milling Hall of Fame has named Mr Abubakar Said Salim Bakhresa its 2026 inductee for his exceptional achievements in the global milling industry.

Founded in 2020 by Milling and Grain magazine in partnership with MC Mühlenchemie’s FlourWorld Museum in Wittenburg, Germany, the achievement recognises individuals whose dedication, leadership and vision have left a lasting mark on the global milling industry.

Under the leadership of Mr Bakhresa, the Bakhresa Group has grown into one of East Africa’s leading industrial conglomerates, setting benchmarks in flour milling, food production and regional food security. His contributions have played a significant role in supporting sustainable industrial growth and ensuring reliable food supplies for millions across the region.

As part of this recognition, Mr Bakhresa will be presented with a bronze statuette at an official Milling Hall of Fame ceremony later this year. The statuette, created by sculptor Sibylle Waldhausen, symbolises the art of milling and the continuous balance between grain availability, process efficiency and flour quality.

Mr Volkmar Wywiol, the founder of Hamburg’s Stern-Wywiol Gruppe and the FlourWorld Museum, said, “At the FlourWorld Museum, we bring the story of milling to life and honour those who shape its future. With the Milling Hall of Fame, we recognise outstanding personalities like Abubakar Bakhresa, whose work has a lasting impact on food security and the global milling industry.”

With his induction, Abubakar Bakhresa joins a select group of international personalities, including Zhighuo Dan, John G Coumantaros, Jamal Al-Hazaa and Museum founder Volkmar Wywiol, all of whom have been honoured for their contributions to the global development of milling.

Legacy of Growth and Industrial Leadership

Mr Bakhresa is a distinguished business leader whose career reflects a strong commitment to growth, innovation and service. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Georgetown University, graduating magna cum laude in 1999.

Since joining the Bakhresa Group, he has been instrumental in transforming the organisation into a major industrial force. Under his leadership, milling capacity has expanded from 250 to over 8560 tonnes per day, strengthening food security and supporting communities across the region.

He has also overseen diversification into new sectors, including the launch of Azam Media in 2013, now one of the country’s leading pay-TV platforms. His contributions extend to the development of Bagamoyo Sugar Limited, alongside continued initiatives in digital commerce and payments, reflecting a forward-looking approach to sustainable growth.

Beyond business, Mr Bakhresa is actively involved in philanthropic initiatives through his role on the board of the Khalid Islamic Foundation. He also serves as Chairman of Azam Football Club, supporting the development of sport and youth in Tanzania.

His leadership is characterised not only by scale and impact, but also by integrity, humility and a long-term commitment to creating value for society. This ethos is reflected in his vision for the milling industry: “To deliver quality, affordable flour to every African home and business—creating lasting value for society.”
