The International Grains Council (IGC) has announced predictions for global grain production in 2025/26. It estimates a solid increase of 3% year-on-year, bringing total output to a record 2,375 million tonnes. Key contributors to this growth include enhanced maize crops in Europe, Argentina, and the United States, which are expected to drive demand across feed, food, and industrial sectors.
Grain production, trade, and non-tariff barriers
During the 62nd Council Session, chaired by Mr. Hamed Oussama Salhi from the Algerian Embassy in London, the Council discussed the impact of non-tariff barriers on trade. Members advocated for increased dialogue on Sanitary and Phytosanitary issues. The Council also renewed the Grains Trade Convention for two more years, emphasising the Secretariat’s expertise and efforts in providing market analysis and support.
Additionally, the IGC announced a partnership with the India Middle East Agri Alliance to enhance trade transparency between South Asia and the Middle East. The Council noted several initiatives under the Algerian Chairmanship, including launching an Arabic version of the Grains Market report and outreach to potential new members.
Going forward, a comprehensive five-year supply and demand outlook will be presented in January 2026, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by markets for grains, oilseeds, rice, and pulses.
