Icos Capital and Bühler host Accelerating Sustainability Summit to drive biotech innovation

Icos Capital and Bühler hosted the “Accelerating Sustainability Summit” at Bühler’s CUBIC Innovation Campus, bringing together investors, industry leaders, and biotech start-ups to explore sustainable solutions powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The event aimed to foster collaboration between start-ups and corporations to address pressing challenges in the food industry.

Nityen Lal, Founding Partner of Icos Capital, emphasized the firm’s commitment to investing in cutting-edge technologies, particularly in biotech and AI. He highlighted the importance of connecting start-ups with established corporations to help scale innovations in food technology, chemical technology, and decarbonisation.

Bühler’s Chief Technology Officer, Ian Roberts, noted that the summit strengthens the partnership between Icos and Bühler, creating a global network to support the transition to a sustainable food system. Bühler aims to accelerate the adoption of new technologies and practices in the food industry.

The biotech sector is facing challenges, including reduced funding and rising costs, but AI offers solutions for designing, testing, and scaling innovations. Start-ups from Europe and North America are focusing on alternative proteins, dairy, and seafood.

Ori Zakin, CEO of BioRaptor, discussed how AI is accelerating the path from R&D to manufacturing, while PHW Group’s Wolfgang Heinzl emphasized the importance of start-ups’ speed and agility in driving innovation.

The summit also underscored the need for high-quality data in AI-driven solutions, with experts agreeing that data quality is crucial for building trust and proving the financial viability of new products.
