New accessory for Perten’s NIR analyser

New transflectance cup for Perten Instruments' DA 7250 NIR spectrometer

Transflectance cup for Perten’s DA 7250 NIR spectrometer

Need an easy and accurate chemical analysis for juices, vegetable oils or other liquids? International Milling Directory (IMD) partner Perten Instruments has developed a new accessory enabling exactly that.

Perten’s DA 7250 near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) analyser was specifically designed for use in food and agriculture, discovering the chemical compositions of powders, pellets, liquids, pastes and slurries. Perten’s new Transflectance Cup is designed to minimise the need to handle liquid samples or clean the equipment between uses, and its gold-coated surface improves the quality of spectral transmission from the sample to its sensors.

Perten Instruments has been providing tools for chemical analysis and quality control since 1962. It is an active partner of the global agricultural industry, and, like IMD publisher Perendale Publishers, it will be exhibiting at the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) conference in Louisville, Kentucky on 23-26 February. The International Milling Directory team invites you to stop by and say hello to both stands.

OLAM and GAFTA to speak at the high-profile Soft Commodities Summit: February 2013, Geneva, Switzerland.

image001

International Milling Directory staff and some members are entering a second day of ISRMAX in Delhi, India. Marking events is something we at Milling International like to do for our readers and International Milling Directory members but we always look ahead to future industry events. One event we are excited about is the Soft Commodities Summit taking place in the scenic city of Geneva, Switzerland in February next year.

The volatile and changing market presents new demands, and the need has arisen to get fresh insights into dealing with priorities in the most effective way. With this in mind, the International Research Network (IRN) brings you an even more focused event with fresh content and sessions on 26-27th February 2013 where you can pick up unrivalled advice and insights on how to develop excellence in every part of your organisation; from building efficient strategies to reducing costs and risks across the supply chain and of course engaging your corporate responsibility towards the crucial new challenges of the industry.

Senior level practitioners across the soft commodities industry will be addressing exclusive presentations over the two days. Olam, Cargill, Armajaro, Ameropa, Louis Dreyfus and HSBC are among the numerous companies involved in the forum this year again. Through interactive presentations, case studies and workshops, their senior-level representatives will be looking at the best practices in terms of reducing costs and driving efficiency within the operations. They will demonstrate in real concrete cases the strategies that can be put in place to help the industry embrace effective approaches to challenges such as sustainability, integration of developing countries, keeping up with the logistical and legal aspects, risk management across the supply chain as well as human and resource asset development.

‘Jagdish Parihar, Managing Director, Natural Fibers Division, Olam International Ltd’ will be discussing the long-term future of agricultural commodities and the key challenges.

‘Pamela Kirby Johnson OBE, Director General, GAFTA’ will be discussing Warehousing – Assessing effective measures and practices in quality control, standards and certification challenges.

Financial institutions and commodity finance specialists will also have a look at the implications of the Euro zone crisis on the industry. The summit is a must-attend event for professionals involved in the soft commodities trading industry, whether they deal with rice, cocoa, cotton, sugar, coffee or grains.

It is a critical point to bring the key players in the industry together once again. SCT 2013 has been designed to allow discussions, benchmarking and networking.

Registration for the summit is open at http://www.softssummit.com/.

4B boosts Load and Value in New Products

4B has invested in tooling to increase the capacities of their popular STARCO steel elevator buckets; as a result, all 4B’s StarcoSteel copy-1 ow have the same or greater capacities than comparable buckets of their competitors.

The Starco bucket was originally invented by 4B Braime’s French subsidiary, SETEM, in the 1980s and was the first low profile elevator bucket to use centrifugal discharge on a parabolic elevator head to achieve much higher capacities on a given elevator leg. As such, the STARCO bucket has revolutionised the elevator buckets market. The Starco elevator bucket has been engineered to provide perfect fill & discharge for a wide range of products. It operates at wide speed range, up to 4.55m/s.

It is not surprising that the STARCO bucket has become a very popular bucket, and has been copied by a number of companies, with varying results. In a range of tests that 4B has carried out to compare their own 4B STARCO buckets with their competitors’ buckets, it has become clear that a lots of buckets actually have a lower capacity than what is claimed on paper; also the quality of the bucket itself can be very different depending on the production process and the quality of the steel used.

Great care should be taken when selecting a STARCO bucket (or a similar model). On request, 4B can provide test results and field evidence to show the differences between different models.

Go 4B is a listed member in 11 categories of the International Milling Directory. Find their entry here.

Bühler concentrates its main Malting activities at a single site

Bühler concentrates its main Malting activities at a single site.

Buhler logo

Milling International, the blog for the International Milling Directory has learned that the Bühler Technology Group will from January 1 2013 concentrate the core functions of its Malting market segment currently located at its two German sites in Braunschweig and Beilngries at the headquarters of its Grain Logistics business unit in Beilngries.

This concentration at a single site will enable technological know-how to be focused, processes to be fine-tuned, and the number of interfaces to be reduced. This stands to strengthen the competitiveness of the Malting market segment in view of meeting future market challenges. All employees in Braunschweig affected by this change will be offered a new job in Beilngries.
